Madeira-Mamoré Railway - EFMM

Museum of the Madeira-Mamoré Railway. (EFMM)

Head Church of the Sagrado Coração de Jesus (Catholic Temple)
Built in 1927 by Salesianos priests, it is the largest and most beautiful sanctuary in Rondônia. Its internal decoration and the colonial style make an interesting contrast to the Amazon landscape. At the corner of Dom Pedro II Street and José Bonifácio Street, Center.

The Governor Jorge Teixeira Memorial.

It maintains a rich collection of objects, images and documents of Governor Teixeira, the man that made history by creating the State and gave it its structure. Go back in time and discover Rondônia. At the corner of Floriano Peixoto Street and Euclides da Cunha Street, Center.

Chapel of Santo Antônio de Pádua.

It is the only construction that resisted effects of time: a rare mark at the extinct Villa de Santo Antônio from the end of the nineteenth century (XIX). From the chapel one can contemplate the beautiful waterfall of the same name. The access can be by EFMM train or by the road to Santo Antônio.

Municipal Natural Park

There are wild animals, exotic plants, streams and low waterfalls and trails in the forest with more than 400 hectares. Visit the Ecological museum, the Center of Environmental Education and the plant nursery. It is at the north end of Rio Madeira Avenue, 10 km from the Center.

Lake Cuniã Ecological Reservation

Almost all the forms of the Amazon wildlife pacifically inhabit this ecological sanctuary of 104 thousand hectares. Since it is the most important natural reservation, it is worthwhile visiting it. At 130 km from Porto Velho by way of the lower Madeira River, Igarapé, Cuniã.

The Fishing Championship at Teotônio

Innumerous teams of fishermen dispute the largest fish every year in September. Take the opportunity to savor dishes of fresh fish. Currents and rocks contrast beauty and emotion. BR 364 toward Guajará. It is 30 km from the Center.

Maici Villa

Lots of green scenery, wild animals, waterfalls, streams with crystal-clear water and hospitable natives. This floating hotel is located where and tourist will have fishing and diving equipment for these sports. The best period: July and December. It is located 240 km away from Porto Velho through the Madeira and Maici Rivers or by way of Humaitá-AM.

Sunset

So much as on the Madeira River or in its tributaries the beauty of the evening is unique. Take a boat ride and see the natives getting ready to sleep while the city lights up for a busy night. The best hours: from 18:30h to 19:30h.

Abunã Fortaleza

This is a historically important site and has beautiful beaches in the summer. The community there lives in perfect harmony with nature. Tourists go there in September for the championships of some sports on the beaches. Visit São Sebastião, a historical chapel. Located 270 km by the BR 364 on the way to Rio Branco-AC.

Flor do Maracujá (The Passion Fruit Flower Folk Festival)

This is the largest open-air folk festival in the North of the country in June of each year. For ten days, tourists can vibrate with the beauty of the “quadrilhas”, “boi-bumbás” dances and folklore groups. Wood-fires and bonfires are part of the scene! Located in an open area on Percival Farqhuar Avenue and José Camacho Street, Pedrinhas.

Carnival in Porto Velho

An inheritance of the Carnival of the 30`s and 40`s, the local people never miss the parades of blocks of revelers and samba schools. On the Saturday of carnival, the “Vai-Quem-Quer” (Go-If-You-Want) Band it pulls a very big crowd of dancing Rondonienses through the streets downtown.. In July there is an off-season carnival with trio electrico! (A long truck with a live band on a moving stage.) The Parade: Jorge Teixeira Avenue, Liberdade.
